Alcoholism Treatment
Alcoholism was listed as the primary
substance abuse treatment problem for 40 percent of addmistions in 2006, which
is down from 51 percent in 1996.
About three-quarters of admissions for
abuse of alcohol alone and for abuse of alcohol with secondary drug abuse were
male.
For alcohol-only admissions, the average age at admission was 39
years, compared with 35 years among admissions for primary alcohol with
secondary drug abuse.
Heavy drinking was reported by 7 percent of the
population aged 12 or older, or 17 million people, which is defined as binge
drinking 5 or more days in the last month.

What to Look for in Alcoholism Treatment
When looking for a
successful alcoholism treatment center, it is important not to fall into the
trap of false information. For example. Despite anyone claiming so, alcoholism
is not an incurable disease. Also, there is a much higher long-term recovery
rate for programs that do not prescribe drugs than for programs that do treat
alcoholism with medications. These medications provide some short-term benefit
at best, but carry sometimes very severe side effects.
Do look for a
treatment center that teaches people that can be in control of their alcohol
consumption and put alcoholism completely behind them in the past. Do not go to
a treatment center that contunually focuses on the problems of the past and
keeps someone stuck there unable to look outward to the future.
Do not
go to a center that believes relapse is part of alcohoism treatment and that it
is a life-long process. Do seek out treatment that expects results and can
provide information on their own success rates for sobriety.
